Ever since PCs got to be an everyday item, people have been getting more nearsighted.
I cannot blame mobile technology for that though, since this phenomenon has been growing since before there were many mobile devices.
Do you remember back when portable phones were the size of a suitcase? Then they shrunk to the size of a sidewalk brick? Remember those days? Office workers were starting to lose their eyesight even back then.
Now that there are so many jobs that require staring at a screen for hours on end and far more people doing so on their own free will, I feel that mobile technology is just something that grew up around the same time.
