I see that you have not looked at the subcategories under religions. There are a variety of subjects. An atheist can answer many of the questions he knows about. Just because you are an atheist doesn't mean you don't know anything about religions. He could have been in a certain religion and left for his own reasons. If this bothers you, you need to get in there and answer more questions than he has answered.

Category Experts are selected based on level of participation (questions and answers) in a category and hoghest points earned in that category. Some of the readers of the category must think Moongrim's answers are worthwhile or he wouldn't have racked up more points than the other participants in the Religions category. And it is Religions with an "s", not Religion according to MY world view (oir yours). I suspect that some of the more vocal devotees of a particular brand and interpretation of religion are too one-sided to rack up the kind of point totals needed to become a community leader.

Actually, I believe that atheists are often some of the top religious scholars. It helps when you have no bias toward one religion or another, to study them objectively. Now I'm not talking about Moongrim specifically, but it IS possible to study religion from a scholarly standpoint, without believing in a religion.

One doesn't have to be religious in order to study religions. In fact, taking an objective, non-biased perspective on the history and literature of world religions is probably easier for an athiest or agnostic than it is for a believer.

Moongrim is very intelligent from what i have seen, how he got this i am not sure. He answers his questions usually very intelligently with thought, perhaps this is why. Some don't like him, but i think his answers have always been truthful, and that is what i look for most in people. Honesty, whether people like it or not, it doesn't matter, just give your honest opinion.

I spent 12 years being "educated" in the Catholic faith. I took classes, wrote papers and passed tests based on what I "learned". I was awarded a scholarship based on my "education"... I refused it. I am an Atheist, and I am quite knowledgeable about religion. One need not be a bug to be an expert on entomology.

i agree with alot of you. to be an expert on all religions it would be very hard to believe in any of them. as far as why one would be so interested in something you don't believe in. maybe they want to believe but need to be convinced. or maybe they hate religious people and like to waste their time. or like me i believed then i lost my belief so i like to explore why i lost my belief and why others have kept theres. is it i just can't accept blind faith or is it something deeper then that.

On the contrary - you can study something without being it. You can be an expert on horses without being a horse, and you can be an expert on a country without being a citizen of the country (e.g. the CIA has hundreds of country experts who are Americans not natives of the country they study). Arguably, an atheist would be a more impartial expert on religion in general than a member of a particular religion, because he would be more impartial. We often see Christians answering generally phrased questions about, say, God with answers particular to the Christian view of God.

Without commenting on one or any members qualifications, an atheist, if he is also respectful of other's right to their opinions, is probably the only person who could approach objectivity.

Imagine you were REALLY studying religions to help you understand who God truly is... The behavior and hypocrisy of most people in "church" turns MANY away from religion. A lot of people that have been in church their entire lives, are no closer to being a christian than anyone else on earth. Nothing about it is REAL to them, it's done out of tradition. You don't find God in a church, you find him in your heart!

That's exactly why the religion - category in this site is not interesting anymore because you got a certain member by the name of Moongrim who gives answers that are helpless to many newcomers that want to learn about religion. The reason he is a (supposedly expert in religion is because he answers so many religious questions without understanding a religion in the first place) because when "I Google some of his answers, the information I recieve is way totally different from his answers, and that just tells me everything that Moongrim is a fraud.

When I ask myself, why is an atheist interested in Religion, I submit: 1. Why waste your time on a subject with which you do not agree? If you are truly an atheist wouldn't you ignore all religion questions. 2. God imprinted an awareness on every man's heart. 3. Moongrim wants to find a rational argument that allows him to believe. Unfortunately for Moongrim, faith is the acceptance of those things that man cannot explain.

As some people enjoy reading up about religion! I'm not a follower of Islam yet I read about it. I'm not hindu either but I can still read about it and find it interesting what they believe and not follow their faith. Perhaps he knows a lot about religion.

Wow...just...wow haha What Moongrim's ranking as an expert in Religions tells me that at least some people on this site have the decency and courage to read, analyze and rank an answer on it's on merits and not allow personal prejudices to interfere. That's why I am staying on the site. Oh, I wanted to add this. Your question says a lot about you but nothing I hadn't already guessed at given other answers of yours I have read on this site.

you do realize not all theology professors believe in god, right? just because someone doesn't believe in something doesn't mean they don't find it interesting enough to study it. or perhaps one who studies it does so just to find the flaws and weaknesses in order to more effectively argue against it. or maybe they were once a believer but have since had a change of heart. you obviously have not thought of these things, and that says a lot about you.

Actually, no it doesn't. This question actually says alot about your inability to think critically: Since when does a person have to BE "x" in order to know ABOUT "x"? I know a thing or two about Ancient Greek history...that doesn't mean I'm 2500 years old! Likewise, a person can be well-versed on the topic of religion, whether or not they are religious.

Its nice to see his hardwork paid off. :) But silliness set aside, I am ok with him being the expert in religion. He adds spice to the site and he answers from his point of view, even if it might be offensive. He's honest and isn't afraid to step on a few toes. As for the point that he's atheist, I don't see what's so wrong about it. He can still be educated in something he doesn't believe in, just like when someone answers questions about Santa or strange scientific theories, aliens or ghosts. Also, the title most likely wasn't his main goal, so I say "chill pill". Someone else will most likely replace him sooner or later if it bothers you so.

I don't think being an expert on something requires that you believe in it. Most religious scholars don't. There are way to many religions out there, most study one, there own. Some study all of them. +5

what makes a person the catagory expert? I would expect it to simply be the one who has the most posts in a certain catagory, in which case you don't have to know much, you simply have to say alot. If I know moongrim, he won't miss any opportunity to show his rather subtle opinion on religion :P

It does say a lot about this site, and it's nothing negative. He was democraticly elected by the people of AB to be in this position. He must be a very good asker and answerer to the questions at hand. Although he is Atheist, it does not mean that he cannot get more points than a theist, I'm sure he makes very logical and very important points, as an atheist usually does.

You think yourself or someone like you should be instead? Just because you believe in something strongly that doesn't automatically make you an expert. And, from my experience, the religious people on here aren't helpful at all. And not even particuliarly knowledgeable. In fact, most are just cuckoo.

It's possible to be an art critic without being a painter, or a football commentator without being a player. There are Catholic priests who are experts about Islam, and British people who teach the French language. And there are atheists who are experts in religion. You might find it insulting that an atheist might know more about your own religion that you do, but such is life.

They just accept whatever everyone else accepts. Freedom requires responsibility. It is easier to believe in the popular religion of the country you were born in. . In the United States, they follow one of the various protestant Christianity beliefs. It is much more convenient than going out on a limb and thinking for yourself.

An expert on this site is just the person who answers the most questions in a category, and gets the most points. It has nothing to do with his actual knowledge on the subject. He may or may not know a lot about religions, I have no idea.
