The US Air Force would not accept "J.R." as a given name when he enlisted, so he became John R. Cash. He signed for Sun Records in 1955 (a year after his discharge) and had his name changed again ... to Johnny Cash
He was named J.R. Cash when he was born. Apparently his parents couldn't decide on a name so they agreed on initials. When he signed up for the Air Force they wouldn't accept just initials so he legally changed his name to John R. Cash. It doesn't stand for anything.
