I think it's like the dog chasing the car. I has no real desire to catch the car but enjoys chasing it non the less.
It probably stems from the simple observation that people often speak highly of the things they want, but seldom of the things they have. A thing you desire to have has an unknown number of possibilities; a thing you have has a known number of possibilities. In other words, it's a downgrade. Once those things are yours, their limitations and utilities and consequences of having them are fully realized, and your optimistic, wishful speculation of their possible greatness is no more.
Is failure a miscalculated success?
