They are the best at their assigned task. SEALs are horrible artillerymen, pretty bad bandsmen, and really awful at fixing nuclear reactors.

I think you meant to ask if SEALs are the best SPECWAR outfit going. Again, they are the best in their niche (recon/intel gathering, selective strikes, infiltration, battlefield prep).

You want an airfield assaulted or a similar large target? Call the Rangers.

Need to raise a battalion of native troops? Call the Green Berets.

Want to change hearts & minds? Ring up the Psyops boys 'n' girls.

    No.
Generally accepted to be the best water based special forces in the world is the british SBS (Special Boat Service).
Generally accepted to be the best ground force in the world is the british SAS (Special Air Service) with the Isreali special forces coming a very close second.
    .
The whole american millatary has a terrible reputation for being bad shots and while the Navy Seals are the best of all the american soldiers they are far from the best in the world. Give them equal weapons and technology as their opponants (any other special force in the world) and they will prob come up on the loosing side atleast half the time.
However, we should all respect anyone that is willing to put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us, even if they serve in a diffrent countries millatary (like the Seals).

I'm a former Force Recon Marine. I did special operations and was assigned to MACV-SOG in Danang and Don Muang, Thailand during the Vietnam War. I worked with Special Forces, SEALs and the Australian/New Zealand SAS. I'm sure times have changed some, but SEALs were restricted to 50 miles from the high-water line. Past this Force Recon did the job. SEALs were the best in the water, but just didn't have the experience for deep recon. SF were extremely tough, were expert soldiers and instructors. Other than Force Recon, I'd be most comforted if my team was backed-up by SAS. They were crazy enough to do anything and that's what needed to be done.

SEALs have the best kill ratio during the Vietnam War.
SEAL Team 6, AKA Development Group is the counter-terrorism team, and is favored over Delta Force.
Red Cell was a unit formed to test America's security against terrorism. Nearly everyone that was selected were from the SEAL Team 6, only one was not (Marine Force Recon).
They were able to penetrate Naval bases easily, obtain nuclear codes and nuclear warheads, force entry into the Navy's submarines and use them as dirty bombs, and 'assassinate' officers within the Navy.
SEALs did not have one casualty during the Gulf War.
It takes over a year to become a Navy SEAL, and 1.5 to 2 more years to become combat operational.
SEALs continue to train in 12 to 18 month blocks and deployed for 6 months, possibly more. SEALs train 24/7 taking time off to either eat or sleep. They get little free time.
Everything above is a fact. They are not my opinions. It's up to you to decide if they are the best SOF. If not, they are certainly close.

The thing is there are completely dark divisions of intelligence that take their pick from the SPECOPS guys in their countries, such as Grey Fox for the US, taking SF guys, and using them for assassination tasks. they only chose the best, therefore they can be considered to have the best individual soldiers, BUT that doesn't make them the best, as the whole organisation needs to be taken into account. SAS are (I think) the oldest SF group in the world (Cheers David!) and SBS are equally trained to the SAS and then some (adding in maritime warfare training) so, one could argue that due to this extra training, they are more versatile than the SAS, so as an SF group, more practical.
But all in all, there is no way to tell who the best is, because when it comes to the top say 4 countries for SF groups (Israel, Britain, USA, and Russia) it's too close to call. Spetsnaz training is mental, check it out!

In the US? Personally, I think the SEALS are the best when it comes to actual hand to hand combat and an all-out shootout. But when it comes to stealth and stuff like that, the Delta Force makes them look like a bunch of little school girls. But really, there's probably some other special ops out there that we don't know about that's pretty much awesome. Who knows...

Are you guys forgetting about the Air Force PJ's and CCT? They train harder and longer than SEAL's and over 90% of people drop out in the first 10 weeks. They're not highly known because they don't go on all the "glamorous" missions that people make movies out of, but when the other branches have someone trapped behind enemy lines, they call in the PJ's.

Well, you could say that... force recon, army SF (ranger are not included because they are more of a larger and much less covert group; they are fantastic though), airforce PJs and SEALs all have specialized areas of expertise and all are top notch.

All these people saying SAS and SBS are amazing are correct yet if you honestly know what you're talking about then you find that todays special operations are all very close as far as quality.

Mossad is legendary but are actually more similar to our CIA special activities division (sad) so are not really comparable to the SO branches...

Don't listen to the person who brings up iraq, he is most likely 12 and doesnt understand the complexities and openly consumes anything the media is feeding him..

Either way, SEALs are no joke, qualify expert on everything and do have some of the toughest training in the world..

SEALS are definitely "up there" in terms of strength when it comes to comparing them to other special forces groups throughout the world...Hard to say for sure, though. If interested, I have a site you can check out about joining the Navy.
