Your best bet is to have a good old Spring (or as the case may be, Fall) Cleaning. Spiders need to have food. A clean house has very little food for them and thus they can't live.
When I say clean, I don't mean sterile. Sterile houses are not healthy as you need the bacteria around so you become immune to them.
I've never heard of this working - but if you're desperate I suppose anything is worth a try - although you would get through a lot of baking soda!! If you're looking for ways to get rid of spiders I suggest having a look at this website, it's got some good honest advice. http://www.getridofspiders.co.uk/

Cheap $ store Baby Powder:
I haven't tried it yet on spiders (about to), works great for ants, sprinkle it around the perimeter of house and ant hills, they walk through it, ingest it, coating their digestive track eventually killing them.
