If you drop something in a toilet by accident, eg a bunch of keys - what should you do to get the item out and make it safe to handle again?

my uncle dropped his false teeth when being sick, picked them out rinsed and replaced yuk

i'd wash it off with hot water and spray lysol on it. leave it to dry for 30 seconds.

Boil it unless it would get distorted.

first off i would get my husband to retrieve the said item out of the toilet and then pour thick bleach over it if i could,mobile phone i would throw away.

Assuming the water's clean - just reach in and grab the thing. Then wash your hands with soap and hot water. It's not a big deal. You can always sterilize whatever it is by sticking it in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, household bleach (use your own good judgment on that one) and/or washing it with hot water and soap. If you can't live with the direct approach, use a coat hanger and pull it out.
