This is the way it used to be. Originally it was the ARPAnet, a military system. Then it was the NSFnet (National Science Foundation) network. Neither of those incarnations allowed anything commercial, not even traffic. That was a very differant time. Once the Internet was opened up to the public it became necessary for advertisers to subsidize all of the public services which everyone takes for granted. Just like TV requires a subsidy, either public or commercial, so do the various services on the Internet. There is some talk to starting another parallel Internet for academic use.

I disagree, because I like having free access to the net. If advertising was banned, someone would have to pay for it, and I'm sure it would end up being me!
-
I have to disagree. If all advertising were to be banned, all the great websites (like Answerbag) would cost money. I'd rather look at a few ads as I scroll by than miss out on this and other good websites. Edited to add: I can't seem to rate anyone right at the moment, sorry.
-
Disagree. However there are big improvements to be made. Currently advertising is the scourge of the internet.
-
It'd be nice, but so many great sites are funded by advertising, it'd be more of a shame to lose them. You can always ignore the adverts. I do.
-
Strongly disagree. I prefer to have my internet free, or nearly so, rather than extraordinarily expensive. It costs a LOT of money to develop sites - especially interactive ones such as Answerbag. The way they are reimbursed for this expense is through advertising. Otherwise, prepare to get out your credit card. (And I'm not talking for a $20 yearly subscription, either.)

I agree. It slows down everything and also clutters the pages. I mean, look at AB. We have the side column as usual, and ads stuck in right under the answer also. I think it's just too much. I know, I know, sites like these probably wouldn't be possible without the ads, but I don't have to like them.

All advertising on the net is banned from now! Oh dear, it's tomorrow and Answerbag's gone because it's lost it's funding, Google's gone because it's lost its funding, etc, etc. Sorry, I don't agree. Pop-up advertising and the like should be banned though.
-
Yeah, I agree it should be banned. It is useless sop. Takes up space and sometimes the ads are very distracting when they are flashing or moving. Most of them are not even what they appear to be if you do click on them and go there.
-
I like my net as free as possible. Ads are a bit of a pain but I think those who don't use them wisely on their sites (please take note Ab)end up being less popular in the long run than those who place them carefully, either way you get the same revenue.
-
Yes ads should be an option to be banned on each pc. Have a ad site for those who want them.
-
I wish it was banned for it should be a source of information, and not a shopping basket.I get enough advertising from every other source.
-
I disagree. Advertising makes it possible for websites to stay up, and for free. Also, some ads can be useful. I've made some use of an ad a few times.
-
I disagree. While having an ad-free internet would be an awesome goal to strive for, it's too late to go down that road. I say this because we already take the free content we get for granted - and we're all about getting what we can for free. If advertising had to stop, the participants would have to eat their costs and internet connection / usage fees would have to rise dramatically - highly unlikely. But while banning advertising isn't going to happen, I do wish that ads were regulated in terms of their interference with actual site content. Ads should not be allowed to dominate or confuse visitors to a web site. They should be easily identifiable as ads, so that the visitor can get to the real content. I have no suggestion for how we would do that, but I feel it needs to be done.
-
If it is going to cost more to use internet if advertising is banned (and it will!), than I am not for it.
-
Disagree, you'd have to pay high prices just to access a site. Answerbag is supported by ads, and it probably wouldn't be here if not for them, along with many other sites.
-
Disagree, free market.
-
No. Let capitalism reign.
-
Disagree, I have actually found some advertisements to be useful, Free Market, Helps someone get paid :)
