In French, if you don't hear what somebody said, do you say "Quoi?" or "Comment?"?

    "Quoi?" would be rude and abrupt.
    "Comment?" or "Encore?" are possible responses,I suppose,but I would think that a typical French person would simply say: "Pardon?" --of course with a heavy French accent!

    More of "Pardon" or "excusez-moi"

    "Quoi" is the question word for "what"...you would use it more like a "Huh?" in English.

    But "Comment" means "how"

    Well, I would just say "pardon?" with a confused look on my face. I don't speak French..

    Although, you could also say neither of the above and go for "Pouvez-vous repeter s'il vous plait?" which means can you repeat that, please - since its a little more clear and polite than quoi or comment =)
