In the United States is not really about age... you can be any age as long as you have the proper education, mental health and have no criminal record.

If you're in the USA... once you finish high school, you would first need to complete a bachelor's degree. It doesn't matter which major you complete, but you will need to ensure you have taken two Biology classes with labs, two Physics classes, two Chemistry classes with labs, and two Organic Chemistry classes with labs before applying for medical school.

Also, before applying for medical school, you would need to take the Medical College Admissions Test (aka MCAT) at least a year before starting med schhol. This test will examine you on the four subjects I mentioned above, plus in English Composition.

there are a lot of things you need to do while doing your undergraduate. It's best to talk with an Academic Advisor to ensure you cover all the bases.

However, once you're accepted into medical school, you would study non-stop for two years and spend about two years doing rotations in a hospital. Once you graduate, you will need to take a licensure exam issued by the State you live in order to be a licensed Medical Doctor. You can't work without it.

Also, once graduated, you will need to do your residency program. This is when you start working as a physician, but you'd be shadowed by others with more experience. Your residency can last from 2-3 to 5-9 depending on the specialty you choose. Neurosurgeons have one of the, if not, the longest residencies --- about 9 years.

So even if you go to the university 18, it will take you, at least 8 years to work as a resident physician. You need to add your residency years after the 8 years of study.

If you're young, it might seem like a long road to travel, but it's one that is worth taking.

    Good luck to you!
