Question

Help answer this question below.

I am huge Led Zeppelin fan, but they confuse me. They are basically 4 British musicians with a love for American Blues music, yet they also mixed it with Eastern Indian chord progressions and Celtic romanticized lyrics about Vikings. Is this "World Music?

Spent my days with a woman unkind. Smoked my stuff and drank.... all my whyyyy iiiine.

Goin' to California, baby! I don't know if you'd call it WORLD music, but with all of the points you mention, and the fact that they travelled the world, at least qualifies it as WORLDLY.

Took my chances on a big jet plane, never let them tell you that they're all --- the saaaaaammee. that's right.

Pardon me... I'm going to get a "Zep fix".

My British rock bands in those days and much earlier were highly influenced by the American blues.Rock is a sort of progression from the blues. Also in those years the younger population had a big interest in meditation and this music influenced rock with the introduction of Ravi Shankar. Since Great Britain has a celtic background this also influenced them, for they had an interest in traditional music.I would still call their music rock and not world music

Surely *all* music is world music? Whether it's Toumani Diabaté from Mali or Ali Bain from Scotland or Rodrigo y Gabriela from Mexico or Sigur Ros from Iceland or some rock group from the US. Even Led Zeppelin.

Calling it "world" music just segregates it and keeps it cornered in its little section in the music shop...

Sorry, went off on a little rant there... :os
