2) Spartacus was a court-martialed Roman soldier sentenced to either exile or life as a Gladiator (at the time, the Roman equivalent of a WWE pro-wrestler). He chose the latter. When he kept actually killing his opponents he was sold to the worst gladiatorial prison for the incorrigable. He broke out, joined forces with a bunch of Samnite guerrillas in the mountains, and proceded to pillage and plunder southern Italy while the Roman Armies were far afield fighting two wars at opposite ends of the empire.
3) None of the Romans of the time could in any way be described as ideological or philosophical kin to modern liberals, or even 19th or 18th century liberals (who also bore little to no resemblence to modern liberals).
