Didn't the World Series used to be played 2 games, then 2 at the other team's home & then 1,1 & 1?

No, it was never two games.
The first World Series the 1903 World Series started as a best of nine Game Series.
Between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans.
The World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff except for 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921, when the winner was determined through a best-of-nine playoff.
