  • Underage drinking is illegal in ALL states, yet that doesn't stop it from occurring in fraternities and sororities either.
  • Why should someone have to "endure" anything in order to join a sorority or fraternity? That's why I never joined one.
  • I think it depends on the organization. I can't speak for fraternities, but I joined a sorority this semester, and it has been a wonderful experience so far. There was no hazing at all. The initiation ceremony is secretive, but that is simply so you learn about the symbols, traditions, and other secret things that bind you together with your brother/sisters. They usually explain the origins of the founding (and all Greek organizations are founded on principles like scholarship, leadership, fellowship, and service. The origin may also be based on something like a bible passage). The only thing that may happen is getting blindfolded (before they reveal secret symbols to you), but it's not scary at all. Also, fraternities and sororities are typically associated with drinking and partying. In my experience, the alcohol policy (no alcohol at events, socials, etc) holds true and it is all "good clean fun." It really is fun, and it really is worth joining.
