Question

Help answer this question below.

A new friend who, due to credit issues has no credit card, asked that I rent a car for her. If she has the car as an 'additional renter,' & the car is involved in a criminal activity, could I be considered 'involved'?

I doubt it but co-signing a loan or leasing a vehicle like this for your friend is the most financially stupid thing you could do.

First of all its the most expensive way to operate a vehicle. Secondly you are taking a big risk that you will the be the one paying for it all.

Consider if she doesn't pay, if you don't pay then they may go after the vehicle but it will kill your credit. So basically you may end up having to pay for her vehicle.

She got herself in this situation let her soak in it, it might teach her some sense.

I wouldn't do it. The greatest controversy you can cause in a friendship is loaning money or doing something like that. Especially since you don't know her that well ... you would get blamed for whatever if it was in your name ESPECIALLY if she bailed and they couldn't find her to prosecute. Just say that you can't and if she's a good friend, she'll understand.

You might be considered, simply because the auto was rented under your name. the police will definitely ask you many questions.

Never let someone use your credit card, that you barely know.

I assume you have learned this lesson.

Tell her to go get a prepaid credit card, don't get sucked in on this. I think you could be held liable if crimanial activity happens because you are the primary renter. She has bad credit for a reason, think about it! Besides you said she's a "new" friend, I don't think you know her well enough yet to trust her. Trust is earned not given.
