In several Sherlock Holmes stories, Doyle alludes to other stories that Watson or Holmes will tell at a later time, yet no such stories exist. Why is this?

In Sherlock Holmes I want to convert the pounds to current American dollars to understand it. Let's start with 700,000 pounds in 1890. Using the retail price index that is 57,408,691 pounds in 2008 or about $91 million dollars. Can that be true?
