  • The authors of the Hebrew Scriptures often used numbers as symbols to convey meaning. The extravagant ages of many of our most poluar biblical characters is one of those ways. In general, an unusually long life-span is intended to reflect a person who has lived a good life in relation to God while shorter life-spans are a sign that they did not. This was a very common way of writing about most any popular and/powerful person in the ancient near east at the time these books were written. Both Assyrian and Babylonian historical documents often 'rated' their own kings poularity by assigning larger or smaller ages and lengths of reign to them. It simply means that Noah and God got along really good.
