It is impossible for anyone to save themselves. But Jesus Christ can and will save anyone and everyone.
Here is the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):
By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

With love in Christ.
We're obviously permanently lost.
Well, that's what he said, isn't it?
"If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"
I think you know the answer.
Here's something to consider, though - David was a man guilty of adultery and - to cover it up - murder. However, God said he was a man after His own heart. What is a righteous man? The scripture says, "There is none righteous, no not one." Who then, has heaven?
The great men of this world - the movers and shakers recorded through the stream of history - were not men who never knew the sting of failure. Rather, they were men who, when they had failed, learned from that failure, stood up, dusted themselves off, and pressed forward toward their goal. These are men who, regardless of their religious beliefs, we can admire and respect to this day.
This I submit to you, to take as you will and believe as you wish: it's the same with righteousness. We're going to fail on our path to righteousness. It's a given. No man is perfect. BUT it's one thing to fail, beg forgiveness, learn from your mistake, and press onward toward that goal and yet another entirely to say, "I'll ask forgiveness when I've had my fun," or, worse yet, "I'm not perfect, so God will just have to forgive me," and cease to press toward that goal of perfection. This life is a battle - a battle towards perfection. And the only way we're going to be able to obtain it is to, when we fail, stand up and press onward. If you don't try, you'll never succeed.
Oh, and how was David a man after God's own heart? He repented from the heart, sought God's mercy, picked himself up, and pressed onward. He still had to face the consequences in this world of his actions, but he had the great privilege of knowing God had forgiven him.
Depends on your religion
Catholics think that you can live a sinful life and it can be undone by an act of perfect contrition before death
As I understand it from a limited reading of the Bible, church attendence and missionaries, if one repents and supplicates to the Lord he will be saved and/or forgiven. Doesn't sound too hard. But I supplicate to very few men and women, and I do mean that literaly
I'm taking it you're Christian (not so knowledgeable in other religions) but Jesus; our savior, died so that our sins might be forgiven - all you need is faith. Furthermore we are all sinners, no one is perfect except God. Read Galations, it addresses how we are saved through faith. Well, so do many other parts of the Bible; but Galations does a nice job in my opinion.
Saved? From the very conditions your God created inthe first place?
Talk about being set up.
There is a difference?
well who ever said we wanted to be saved ^^
Why, we must be in the front row!
Yes indeed. Just imagine hiding yourself away, leaving only an ambiguous book - full of talking snakes, magic trees, talking donkeys, angels who shag earthlings, giants, massive levels of bloody sacrifices, genocide on a grand scale, magic boats, magic boxes and so on and so forth - as the only evidence of your existence, then condemning people to suffer eternal torment forever and ever and ever just for thinking said book might not be 100% factual.
Now THERE's a god worthy of worship...
Were all unGodly and sinners, why do you think we have to be saved? Why else did Jesus have to pay for Man's sins?
God disciplines and chastens his own. His children also experience the consequences of their sins.
Proverbs 11:31; If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner.
The righteous suffer loss, pain and experience suffering. The Lord Jesus strongly purges and painfully judges His Church, which He loves, so what will be His fury and wrath on the ungodly.
