You are right to be baffled by that one. There was a big debate over just what was being said (denser or dancer, either of which make no sense unless you know the reason for the line).
The lyric in question was inspired by a comment made by Hunter S. Thompson, where he stated that America was raising "a generation of dancers". Brandon Flowers expressed his frustration over the reception of the song in a interview with Rolling Stone. He was irritated over the confusion with the lyric and with the fact that many of the band's listeners were unhappy with the dance beat.
Here's my guess
Sometimes on music boxes there are dancers who keep going round and round and round..ballerinas most often. They move but they don't breathe and they don't go anywhere. I have never heard the song.

You're reading In the song by The Killers,"HUMAN",in the chorus part of the song,a question is being posed: Are we human,or are we dancers?? I'm baffled,I wonder if others are baffled as well? Does any AB person know what they are on about,is it a quote from something?

Sounds like you have nailed the truth! I figured it MUST have been a reference or quote or something, because standing alone without support the lyric makes no sense at all. But you have explained it well. Don't know much about late US writer Hunter S.Thompson, but I think he was somewhat unconventional.

Unconventional writer? Ha, Thompson was an unconventional human ;p
You should check out the movie that was based on one of his books, called "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
