The game rating should be on the box. Other than that, if you're still unsure, or if there is no approx age limit, contact the company. But, dependent on the game itself, I've said, once the child knows right from wrong actions, 18-20 should be a reasonable age range(in my viewpoint only).
If the violence is unencouragding; 12 and older would be sufficent.

If the violence is heavy and implied like it is acceptable; then 16 and older would be sufficent if the teenager is mature and open minded and 18 or older would be sufficent if the teenager isn't mature and open minded for his/her age.
It depends on the rating. T = 13+, M = 17+.
