• This is not an argument: If humans can't do it, then there must be a god. That is incredibly arrogant. Also, cells are not the building blocks of life. A cell is the epitome of life. I believe you are thinking about the Miller and Urey experiment, which succeeded in the synthesis of organic molecules, such as 20 different amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. From that, it is only a short jump to theoretically allow for a self replicating sequence. While yes, humans have not been able to replicate an abiogenesis event, it is a far cry to say it is impossible. Furthermore, it necessarily wasn't abiogenesis. There is new evidence which suggests (amino acid, etc) that life, or life components might have been introduced via a meteoroid.
  Also, I'm going to play my arrogance card and say that you are not qualified to say what is and isn't possible in the domain of science. I am a scientist and my colleagues are scientists. I learn the newest and greatest science that the modern world develops, as it is discovered. I'm just a student, so of course I don't know it all, but the combined genius of my community is far greater than a few outsiders who said that it happened by magic. We search for the answers. You act the coward and live in ignorance. Lastly, if you don't believe in science, I'd suggest the not use or believe in anything that science has ever developed. So no more electronics for you, closer to my field, why don't you try a little faith healing? Don't go to a doctor. Hell, it might increase the overall IQ of the species.

• Science is simply the observation of what already exists. Science may be able to prove through experimentation some of these observations, but they cannot create anything without the ingredients that were already created in the first place. Science was one of my favorite subjects in school, and I still enjoy thoroughly. But it was never able to disprove the existence of intelligent design...by a Creator. If anything, it reaffirmed my belief in the God of the universe. As far as the cell--every lifeform has them--yet science has not been able to create a single one in the lab. And even if they did, it would be using ingredients that have already been created. My argument is no argument at all. Science and God does exist simultaneously--and eventually science will prove the existence of a Creator. But meantime, faith puts me ahead of the line. I get to see the truth first, as well as the others who trust beyond what their eyes can see. Actually, compared to a randomly designed universe, an intelligently designed universe is just so much more logical and wisdom based. Being in science, you must already know the tremendous odds of everything coming together perfectly without some source of intelligent direction and guidance. Arrogance has nothing to do with anything.

• Well ok the point is that energy, as science can prove, cannot be created or destroyed, therefore always was in one form or more. What can be proven about the existence of God?
  Religion and science can work together but believing in God opens a portal to the supernatural and the unnatural. I don't think science can agree to that.

  2) the cosmological argument: everything has a beginning and an end (except God), energy cannot be created or destroyed, so how was the first enrgy created at the beginning of time? God created it

• 1) That is like saying odds is a valid argument.. it generally ain't. Estimating the number of planets existing in the universe scientists have calculated that about 320 planets could meet the same conditions as Earth.
  2)Energy and time are infinite; before the big bang time existed in a non-elapsing state and energy existed as the gravitational force of the black hole our universe big banged from. In other words space/time and energy existed in a zero dimensional state. When the BB occurred time began to elapse, space happened and gravity changed form into energy and 'condensed' into matter.

  Obviously, Bible-God says He will cause world peace to become a reality in the (hopefully) near future (Mat 5:5), but it seems like in order to benefit from that at all, you would have to at the bare minimum believe in their existence beforehand, I think.

• That somewhat confuses cause and effect, though. That is, the God of the Bible will cause world peace whether or not one chooses to believe in him. But part of balancing the world peace equation is to deal with those taking peace away. You can't have peace so long as there are people causing problems - even UN peacekeepers are obliged to carry arms.
  
  Getting mowed over by God though seems like a less than idea way to have confirmation of his existence though.

• Well.. almost.
  
  Keep in mind that "peace" is an entirely subjective term. No two people have exactly the same understanding of what peace is. Some people think peace is to completely wipe out your enemy so they can't cause any more problems. Others think it's to learn to coexist with them. In either case, both views are entirely personal opinions rather than objective. Taking that a step further then, a sentient God would naturally have their own views on what "peace" meant.
  
  The point of the Bible is the ultimate establishment of God's vision of "peace" through his 'Kingdom' (Luke 4:42-43, Mat 6:9, 10). The key word here is 'Kingdom' as opposed to 'Democracy'. A monarch has the right to remove anyone he wants to for any reason whatsoever (a right that comes backed by being the supreme being). If God deems that because you have dirty hair or crooked teeth or walk funny, he wants to have you dismissed, he could do so. In fact, he could have you removed for no reason at all. Fortunately, that is not the God described in the Bible, but the point is that ultimate authority gives you the right to make whatever rules you want.
  
  To be a part of God's peaceful Kingdom, you have to "opt-in" as it were. The God of the Bible has promised to essentially hit the reset button on human society because it has reached a point where it is unsustainable, faulty beyond repair, and will ultimately self destruct (Mat 24:3, 7,8, 21-22). A reset button of course means that - by default - everyone is destroyed, but God has made a way out for those that want it.
  
  That isn't to say that God is going to save a person just because they're "good" because the term "good" is again, subjective. God's definition of "good" is clarified in scripture, but most people choose to live by their own version of good, because it's a much easier standard to live by. After all, if you see something in yourself that you don't like, you can just change what "good" means, and rationalize all your problems away. Free will grants a person has the right to do that of course, but God will not accept that any more than your employer will give you your paycheck if you don't work according to company standards.
  
  A person that wants to see real peace (the kind where people truly are equal and have true security) has to "opt-in", they have to choose to live by God's definition of "good" rather than their own. Anything less is unacceptable.

Even if they live an exemplary life? Yet, if someone believes in him but causes wars, rapes children and hates his fellow man, he is saved? What a completely screwed up individual and certainly not one I would want any part of.

• I'm not really sure what any of that is based on? What would be the point of doing anything if you already know what's going to happen before it takes place. Life for such an entity would be static and any supposed interaction with anything or anyone would be meaningless.
  
  Instead we read:
  "The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart . And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them." (Gen 6:5-7, see also: Does God know everything?)
  
  Furthermore, what does it mean to be "exemplary". Again, since that's a subjective term just like "good", who gets to define once and for all what it means to be "exemplary"? Do you? The President? Karl Marx? Everyone has their own opinion as to what it means to be "good", but its meaningless against someone who has the ultimate power to back it up. In the physical universe, might does really make right.
  
  Finally, where does it say that someone who rapes and causes wars gets God's favor if they believe in him? Instead we read:
  
  "The time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me." (John 16:2, 3).
  
  People will be hypocrites, but that is not to say that God approves of it. Simply put, not everyone who claims to represent God does. But don't believe everything you hear just because it comes from someone who says they believe in God.

• We don't know, but any god would know everythign we were going to do before he even made us. That was my point.
  When I talked exemplary I was referring to the starting wars that you were talking about.
  You talked of atheists taking the peace away and so therefore they would not be favoured, which suggests believers would be. There are many believers who commit some illegal if not immoral according to the bible, crimes.

• There's the tricky part. If you review the conversation, you'll notice I never said that 'atheists' would not be saved, while 'believers' would. The reason for that is, that is not what the text says either. For example, Jesus himself says:
  
  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" (Mat 7:21, 23)
  
  Anyone who calls Jesus "Lord, Lord", would obviously be considered a 'believer', they even did a number of supposedly wonderful things that are supposed to gain them favor in God's eyes, but, you'll note that instead of being congratulated for their belief and their supposedly righteous actions, they're rebuked for as "evildoers".
  
  In fact, scripture almost never makes the distinction between 'believer' and 'non-believer' because the difference is immaterial. The text instead states that God is going to reset everything, and that the only way to preserve yourself through it is to do X, Y and Z. If you do only X and Z - no dice. If you do Y and Z but not X - no dice. If you do A, B, C and D instead of X, Y, and Z you still get nothing, because that was not what God asked to begin with, just like if you go to work and wash the windows, but your job was really to make coffee, you don't get paid - you get paid to make coffee not wash windows. Anyone that does not live up to God's set standards does not get saved irrespective of what religion they belong to or what they believe in. God simply doesn't care. He's not bound to some stupid rules about belief and weird religious logic tricks. He gives the opportunity, and either you take it or you don't.
  
  Secondly, God doesn't have to know everything to be God. He is God by virtue of the fact that nothing in the universe has the power to stop him from doing whatever he wants. When you hold ultimate authority over everything, you are - by default - God. God makes the rules, and either you comply or you get nothing. But as far as God is concerned, there is no distinction between lack of belief and belief without proper action.

• By saying "well...almost", I was trying to give a positive response to something that wasn't quite accurate. I didn't think that it would be interpreted as 'atheists are evil'. Just a generic positive response.
  
  Secondly, might has always made right. There isn't a point in history where that has not been the case. When Britain colonized America, it did so because it had the power to do so. During the American revolution, when the Americans drove out the British, they did so by force. When the Americans began to settle the western frontier, they pushed out all of the natives by force. You can sit at your computer and have a peaceful discussion because you have the police force watching over the interests of the domestic citizenry as well as the military watching out for foreign intruders.
  
  But, the problem isn't force - force is a universal constant, and will never go away. Every single atom of every single molecule has obey the four primary forces (gravity, electromagnetic, strong/weak-nuclear) in order a universe even to exist. Force is a necessity, as well as a tool.
  
  The problem has always been that people always use force for selfish reasons. We read:
  
  "God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes." (Ec 7:29)
  
  and again:
  
  "Man has dominated man to his injury." (Ec 8:9)
  
  People were made to be upright, but they abuse each other - treat each other like tools for selfish gain. That is the source of the majority of the problems we face, and that is the whole reason God needs to step in to fix the problems. God will exercise force to remedy the situation, make it fair and peaceful, but a person needs to make a personal choice to attain it.

• No, might hasn't made right, might has simply taken control, doesn't mean it is right.
  So god is a god simply because he can force us to do anything he wants or punish us if we don't. But, he also made us and therefore could have chosen to make us how he wanted us, instead he made us in a way that we rebelled forcing him to punish us. Surely that just means he wanted to be able to punish us.
  Again, not someone I woudl want to know.

• There are a few problems here though:
  
  Can you name something that is completely free of something else's control? I argue that there is no such thing, not even God because even he chooses to work within his own framework. Even when doing something as trivial as buying milk from the store, you are not free to just take the milk and go, you are obligated by force of law to pay for it or you will be penalized. If you don't pay your mortgage every month you don't get to keep your home, if you don't go to work you don't make the money you use to enjoy time with your friends, if you don't eat - the penalty is death. Force is a part of how the universe functions, which means its a very real part of human society as well.
  
  The point though is that the more closely you examine your life, the more you'll see that are always under some control. If you chose to move away from society and grow your own food, you would be at the mercy of the land. Most people choose to live in a society though, because living off the land is very unstable, and societies led by a government can afford greater protections. The problem with that is that you are required to give up certain freedoms to gain that protection - you can't just go into the store and take food, you have given up your freedom and must now live according to the customs of the land ... or be penalized.
  
  God is no different. Fall in line, or be penalized. It's not a new concept, it's how the entire universe already works, but instead of being a law of nature or a law of a corrupt politician who levies force for his own personal profit, it is a law of the one that gave us love, and speech, and music and food, and families, free-will, beer, and sex. God, Yahweh, provides bountifully for people, but people continue to choose to selfishly put self-interest above what is really good for everybody. People don't want to be bothered with what really is in the common-interest of everybody, they just care about "what I wan't to do", but you can't have a planet of seven-billion people doing whatever they want without having some very major conflicts. It's precisely because people have abused everything that God so kindly gives that he has chosen to start fresh. God didn't create the Taliban, or chemical weapons, or rape, or nazi-ism, the crusades, water-boarding, suicide bombers, or land mines - we did.
  
  Again, for anyone that wants the way out, it is available, but too many people care only about perusing their own interests. It's unfortunate that self interest is the direct cause of a lack of world peace.

  They are choices, I choose to have a home so I choose to have a mortgage to pay for it. Simply choice. I live within this society so I choose to follow its rules, not everyone does and not everyone is punished.
  
  Yes, if said god existed we do live by his laws, laws he made knowing full well that we woudl break them so he could punish us. I seriously think that is called being a sadist.

• For the first eighteen year of my life I was raised as a Christian while being told that the Bible is the WORD OF GOD.

  Roman Emperor Constantine the Great needed a single canon to be agreed upon by Christian leaders to help him unify the remains of the Roman Empire.
  Until this time various church leaders could not decide which books would be considered "holy" and thus "the word of God" and which ones would be excluded and not considered the word of God.
  Emperor Constantine used what motivates many people to action. He offered the various church leaders money to agree upon a single collection of writings that would be used by all Christians as the "word of God".
  These Church leaders came together at the Council of Nicaea and VOTED the "word of God" into existence."
  In order for it to serve as a unifying force, this religion would, by necessity, have to be inclusive of all ethnic and racial groups.
