I know you may not believe this - But in a Old house I lived in there were big red wasps - I got stung often because they were in my house -- My point is when they stung me it eased the pain I had in my back (for real)

    G'day Dazed1,

    Thank you for your question.

I can understand why as they have a fierce sting. However, they do play an important role as part of the food chain. As well, they are an important tool in biocontrol as every pest insect has a wasp that is a predator or parasite of it. If we didn't have wasps, we would have more insect pests.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Wasps have their stingers because of their need to paralize their prey, most insects that prey upon other living organizms have developed some means of immobilizing their prey. Wasps feed on other insects, different wasps have different preferred meals. But every insect pays an important role in the natural order of things in some way or another, even when it isnt obvious. Natures not always for use to understand, just accept. Its human nature to question things, why is the sky blue, why are we here, what is the purpose of this and that. Wasps and other insects are products of millions of years of evolution, most have been around since prehistoric times, and will be long after humans leave the earth.

they are a part of nature, and are therefore precious. humans have no perceivable benefit to nature - we are destroying our planet, yet we exist - i don't think you should complain much about wasps, which, on the whole, leave you alone.

Absolutely, most definitely *NO* use WHATSOEVER? How is a wasp 'eating' nectar useful?! It's snaffling the 'Good Stuff' that bees (which I like) need to pollinate flowers and make honey...(wasps do neither!)

...and as for THAT MYTH...LEAVE WASPS ALONE AND THEY'LL LEAVE YOU ALONE? I've never heard such twaddle!! Unlike fluffy 'ickle bees, wasps are vicious, vindictive little shites that can sting more than once and without ANY provocation whatsoever....they should be exterminated...all of them....I'm sure the global ecosystem wouldn't be THAT detrimentally affected!!

    Grrrr..

In the summer they perform the useful task of killing hundreds of other insects that are themselves a problem in the home and garden.eg the yellow and black wasp Paravespula vulgaris although feared by many, is also useful to the gardener, eating harmful flies and aphids as well as caterpillars, nectar, refuse and fruit.
