What percentage of the U.S. population is comprised of legal immigrants?

    In very round numbers, there are about 12 1/2 million legal (green card) immigrants in the US right now or around 4% of the US population plus about another about 12 1/2 million naturalized citizens.

    The number of illegal immigrants is of course a guess, but 12 1/2 million of them too would be roughly in line with most estimates I have seen.

    In other words, about 12 1/2% of the US population is foreign born.
