Actually it's closer to mucous. The substance is waxy but it doesn't make it wax, thats just retarded but i can agree to how it may seem like it. Earwax isn't always waxy either, typically when it is first expelled to the ear, it can be quite watery almost. the hardening of this substance can be said it is wax in this sense, but you can leave pasta sauce out and it can get waxy too but thats not wax, is it?
Cerumen is a waxy substance to help clean the ear... so, it's wax. Any substance with the same qualities qualify for the name.

Wax would be a permeable(mostly often anyways,) solid, that has the capability to melt and reform upon cooling. Earwax isn't always the same for every person, and some people have more of a constant watery composition or v.versa. "Ear wax" is a coined term as the scientific term would be cerumen, but it can and does make sense for it to be called earwax ^^). But I am rather picky I suppose.
