Well yeah, civil partnerships are for same sex couples and heterosexual couples aren't legally eligible.

Straight couples can get married anyway, why would they even want to get a civil partnership? Do you know their reason? Either way, they would have the same rights and status regardless of whether they had a marriage or civil partnership, so its not the end of the world =)

I'm not clear on British civil law...but on the face of it I'd say no...if there is such a provision in the books it should apply to all.

I don't really see why they thought they needed one; it sounds like a couple wanting to get their names in the paper to me. They could have just got married, and if they are not into the idea of getting married in a church for religious reasons then simply get married at a registry, or if none of those suit them then just live together like many other people do happily.

I don't understand why a heterosexual couple would want a civil partnership when they could just get married.

If you mean homosexual couple I have only heard of one case similar to what you describe and it wasn't that they were refused a civil partnership, but that the owner of the premises at which it was to take place refused to allow the premises to be used for a civil partnership - hardly the same thing.
