  • You gave the reason in your question - the moon's gravity pulls at the water in the oceans. The moon is the major factor in causing tides. The sun has a much more limited effect, but the fact that they are both involved is demonstrated by the fact that we have spring tides (higher than average) when their influence is combined and neap tides (lower than average) when their influences are in opposition to each other.
