The Obama Administration will transfer Khalid Sheik Mohammed to New York for trial. How does this qualify as coddling terrorists? Turning the 9-11 mastermind over to a jury of New Yorkers to decide his fate doesn't strike me as coddling.

My apologies in advance for my unusual mob mentality on this situation. This is out of character for me. It's coddling due only to the fact that none of the victims of 9-11 or their families had the chance to defend themselves. Why should he? He is costing us much more, now that we have to pay for his defense and protection, on top of his food, shelter and clothing, when a rope would be so much cheaper. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

We've paid plenty already, in the form of blood and sheer heartache. It's ironic that the overwhelming majority of Americans don't get help with with the most basic human needs, while he is treated like royalty, comparatively. We have to protect and defend the person who plotted to murder us, then followed through with it. Let him swing. +5

I am an Independent and I am angry about these barbarians being brought to NYC.
NYC has not forgotten 9/11 . We all know people who were their.
Whatever Obama's motivation this makes protecting NYC more difficult. They will attempt to escape if they can.
I think they deserve the death penalty. If you spoke to a few of the people who barely escaped with their life you would agree. I also know people who said goodbye to loved one's who could not escape on the telephone.
We are a big city but almost everyone knows a few people. The stories are still being told in NYC. Every year our property taxes go up. They say we are safe; but Homeland Security recently cut our funding.
NYC does not want these animals in our city.

I certainly don't see it as coddling a terrorist. I think it is a wise move. THe whole world will be watching. If we put him on trial in Guantanamo under a Military Tribunal we'd be handing Bin Laden a massive recruiting tool. We've had too much kangaroo court 'justice' already. It's time to get reassert the rule of law.

    Huh.

Honestly, though...I can't think of too many places where he COULD go where he'd be coddled, much less New York.

There are a great many people out there who are angry for the fact of his trial in the first place. Phillis, God bless her, put a lot of this into words in her answer.

But the fact remains that he MUST go to trial. And it MUST be an honest trial, as well. It cannot be a sham.

If it is, then our system is indeed deeply flawed...and that would play right into the hands of the terrorists.

As Judge Young said to Reid:

"This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and a just sentence. It is a righteous sentence. Let me explain this to you.

We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect.

Here in this court where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, you are a terrorist.

And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not treat with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists.

We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.
    .
    .
    .
    .
Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. Day after tomorrow it will be forgotten. But this, however, will long endure. Here, in this courtroom, and courtrooms all across America, the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done.

The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged, and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.

See that flag, Mr. Reid? That's the flag of the United States of America. That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag still stands for freedom. You know it always will. Custody, Mr. Officer. Stand him down."

    http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/01/31/reid.transcript/

If we do NOT give this man an honest trial, under the full authority of the laws of this country, then we render the concept of justice as a sham, hollow to the point of non-existance.

But I'm with you, Chris: I'm gonna go through a LOT of popcorn on this one!
