A spoiler in the automotive world is an aerodynamic device often found on some cars and trucks. It serves both an aesthetic and performance purpose.
Use
A spoiler is installed to reduce air movement across the body of a vehicle in motion, thus enabling it to pick up more speed. A spoiler is also meant to be a beautifying accessory by giving the vehicle a sporty look.
Types
The most popular type of spoilers are rear spoilers, which are placed on the trunk of the car. However, there are also front or lip spoilers, which are meant to reduce air underneath the vehicle to reduce aerodynamic lift.
Make
Spoilers are usually made of fiberglass, ABS plastic or carbon fiber. These materials are used for maximum durability.
Customization
Although automakers install their own spoilers on vehicles, you can purchase aftermarket ones from car accessory manufacturers. In such cases, you would need to know the factory color code for your car if you want to have your spoiler(s) painted the same color as your vehicle.
Significance
Because of their aerodynamic and aesthetic value, spoilers are widely used in racing and high-performance sports cars.
