  • The class of a car amplifier is the classification the amplifier falls under. There are four categories under which amplifiers fall, each with its own ups and downs.

    Class

Classification is used in car amplifiers to describe the amps' circuit design. Car amplifiers are also put into classes based upon the way in which their output stages are powered.

    Class A

Class A amplifiers produce the highest sound quality of all classes of car amplifiers. However, they are extremely inefficient and run very hot.

    Class B

Class B amplifiers are known to be more efficient than Class A because they turn off for half of every signal cycle.

    Class AB

The most common class of car amplifiers is Class AB. These amplifiers combine all of the good things about Class A and Class B. They are much more efficient than Class A amps and produce a much higher quality of sound than Class B.

    Class D

The most efficient and energy-friendly classification of car amplifiers is a Class D amp. These amps switch off at least twice every signal cycle, but this causes a lot of distortion.
