<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Seal a Potential Problem
Asbestos tile is only dangerous if broken, so the tactic of asbestos encapsulation is effective in covering good tile. Seal the space with an air-proof barrier such as plywood, sheetrock, paint or polyethylene. This should solve the problem--at least in the short run.
On the Other: It's Only Temporary
When you cover up asbestos, it's still there. Years later, you--or your home's next owner--might rip up the barrier with no memory or knowledge of what's underneath. Why take the chance? If you encapsulate your tile floor, remember that it's only a temporary cure until you hire a professional removal service.
Bottom Line
It's effective, easy and inexpensive to cover unbroken asbestos tile. But the risk of accidental or careless barrier removal in the future makes it a better idea to eventually get the tile professionally removed. Never leave asbestos in your home if the floor is already in poor shape.
