Those in the pecan business and casual gardeners agree that fertilizing pecan trees with zinc can significantly increase the production of nuts while improving their quality. Even young trees that aren't of nut bearing age need zinc to spur growth.
On the Other: There Are Environmental Concerns
Some zinc fertilizers are made with or contain hazardous metals and chemicals that can harm the environment. Just reading the label isn't enough, as fertilizer laws only require the manufacturer to list helpful chemicals. So it can be difficult to know if your fertilizer is safe.
Bottom Line
As long as you use a quality or organic fertilizer that does not contain anything environmentally hazardous, zinc can only help the growth and production of pecan trees. Zinc will make your trees bigger, stronger, and cause them to bear larger nuts.
