  • Testing for crack cocaine used to be difficult, but scientific technology and rapid advances in medical research have made it easier. Anonymity and convenience are key concerns for people worried that drug use (or association with drug users) may cause them to fail a drug test.

    Types

According to erowid.org, there are five types of drug tests: "urine, blood, hair, saliva and sweat." Urine tests are not only the most widely used, they are also typically the least expensive and the easiest to use. Saliva tests are also easy, but require lab processing. Blood and hair tests are more invasive and cost much more, while sweat tests are still quite rare.

    At-Home Tests

Over-the-counter drug tests that detect crack cocaine can be purchased at most pharmacies, and are taken by urinating on a stick-type measuring device. A symbol or particular color will determine whether the result is negative or positive in just a few minutes. Such tests can detect cocaine in urine for as long as five days after use. Many include information inside the box about how to contact drug treatment counselors. As of November 2009, drug tests at stores such as Target, Walgreens and CVS cost about $30.00 or more.

    Lab or Doctor Testing

Drug tests can also be administered through a medical laboratory or your doctor, although they are often more expensive than at-home testing. The lab or doctor's office may use a test similar to that purchased over the counter. As a urine sample is required just before testing, in a controlled environment, these tests are typically perceived as more accurate and are more commonly used for legal purposes or at the request of a potential employer. At stand-alone labs, such as Quest Diagnostics, you may not even need an appointment to take a blood or urine test.

    Online Tests

You can also purchase drug-testing kits or pay for a drug test online---this offers your best choice for anonymity, if that is a primary concern. Most sites ship drug-testing products in "plain brown wrappers" for that reason. Some will require that urine samples be shipped to them in containers they provide. Others send you a kit to obtain a result at home.
