Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when gastric acid in the stomach flows into the esophagus. Most people get heartburn from time to time, but if you experience it at least twice a week, you may have acid reflux. Eating spicy, acidic foods can trigger heartburn and other symptoms of acid reflux. Starchy, low-acid foods, such as carrots, can relieve the symptoms.

On the Other: Medication May Be Needed

If your acid reflux is severe, dietary changes may not provide enough relief. Your doctor may prescribe an H-2-receptor blocker (such as Pepcid or Zantac) to help your stomach function normally. Over-the-counter antacids may also be more immediately effective for heartburn. In any case, simply adding carrots or other "natural cures" to your diet won't have much effect if you don't also cut out the foods/drinks that are causing the acid reflux.

    Bottom Line

See your doctor if your symptoms persist despite diet modifications. A healthy, nonsmoking lifestyle should alleviate the symptoms of GERD/acid reflux, but sometimes heartburn happens to the best of us and more medical attention is needed.
