  • Most people have experienced speech anxiety at least once in their life. Many experience symptoms so extreme that they may find it impossible to speak in front of any large group of people. There are a number of causes of speech anxiety, some of which are easily treatable, some of which may require medical or psychiatric treatment.

    Fear

Fear is the primary motivator in most cases of speech anxiety. Fear of being judged by the audience, fear of being humiliated by making a mistake, fear of being unable to speak. All of these factors contribute to an anxiety that can ultimately lead the speaker to commit the very mistakes that he or she fears.

    Past Conditioning

A conditioned response may be the cause of speech anxiety in many people. If you performed poorly the first few times you spoke in public, your body may have learned to associate public speaking with humiliation.

    Poor Preparation

Poor preparation is a major cause of speech anxiety. Taking the time to practice a speech many times in different contexts can alleviate anxiety.

    Lack of Experience

Lack of experience is another easily remedied cause of speech anxiety. It is natural to be anxious about trying something for the first time. Putting yourself in low-stress situations where you can practice your public speaking skills can help reduce anxiety in the future.

    Psychological Blocks

A psychological block can also cause speech anxiety. This may be due to some past trauma, or due to an underlying psychophysical problem. In this case, professional treatment may be the best solution.
