  • Eczema and psoriasis are both skin conditions that cause rashes and other similar symptoms. But the cause and care for each disease is uniquely different. Any skin rashes should be evaluated by a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

    Appearance

Eczema usually appears as a red or brown rash, with severe cases causing blisters or bumps that may crust over. Psoriasis also causes a red rash, but this rash tends to have a distinct silvery sheen and scaling. Psoriasis may also cause thickened and pitted nails.

    Symptoms

Both conditions may appear anywhere on the body, but the rashes tend to focus on the inner elbows, knees and hands. Eczema usually causes intense itching and severely dry skin. Psoriasis symptoms include itching and painful and swollen joints.

    Causes

Eczema is usually associated with hypersensitivity or an allergic reaction. Asthma and allergy sufferers are common targets of the disease. Psoriasis is an immune system condition wherein the body attacks healthy skin as if it where fighting infection.

    Treatments

Treatment for both conditions involves anti-itch or anti-inflammation medication and moisturizers. Eczema sufferers may be prescribed antihistamines to combat the allergic reaction. Psoriasis treatments also include drugs that suppress the immune system and slow skin cell regeneration.

    Outlook

Childhood eczema usually goes away with age, but adults with the condition may have recurrent flare-ups often associated with an allergic reaction. Psoriasis isn't curable, but it is treatable with proper diagnosis and care.
