Pergo flooring is a laminate composite that consists largely of fiberboard wrapped in melamine. The flooring is specifically designed to resemble genuine hardwood while providing important advantages including durability and ease of care. Although not as long-lasting as hardwood, Pergo flooring can last for decades with very little maintenance.

Normal Cleaning

Pergo flooring generally repels dirt and stains rather than absorbing them. Sweep or lightly vacuum the floor daily to remove debris. Wipe up spills when they occur. Pergo flooring is moisture resistant, but liquid puddles should be removed promptly. Mop Pergo floors approximately once per week or when they appear dull or dingy. Use a damp regular mop rather than a high-powered jet mop. Very mild surface cleaners may be used, but avoid harsh chemicals. Never wax your Pergo flooring.

Tough Stains

Very few materials stain Pergo flooring, but products such as nail polish, markers and lit cigarettes may create difficult marks. Mop with a diluted solution of vinegar or ammonia and water to fight these stains. Pergo sells a cleaning product specifically designed for use on its flooring. Try nail polish remover on particularly stubborn spots.

Protect Your Flooring

Pergo flooring is scratch and dent resistant, but is not impervious to damage. Use floor protector squares underneath furniture legs. Place area rugs underneath entertainment centers, couches and other solid items. Use a welcome mat to wipe loose pebbles and debris from shoes. Never drag furniture across the floor.

Repairing Pergo Flooring

Repair minor chips or scratches with wood putty. Never sand or attempt to refinish the floor. Deep gouges or large areas of damage cannot be easily repaired. Damaged planks may be individually replaced with no need to replace the entire floor. The job is moderately difficult, but can be accomplished by any reasonably crafty homeowner.
