  • Black mold is a dangerous species of fungus that often infects specific areas of homes and buildings. Four major types of black mold exist; these types range from non-toxic to highly toxic. It is important to know which type of black mold you are dealing with in order to maintain the proper precautions during cleanup.

    Cladosporium

Cladosporium is the most common type of black mold found both indoors and outdoors. Although it is not toxic, exposure to high levels of Cladosporium black mold could cause asthma, allergies, sinusitis and pulmonary infections.

    Stachybotrys

Aspergillus is among the most common types of fungi in our environment. There are many different species of Aspergillus black mold. Some of these species only cause allergic reactions, while others may cause a serious fungal infection.

    Memnoniella

Stachybotrys is one of the two types of black mold that produce mycotoxins, which can be extremely hazardous and toxic. Stachybotrys black mold thrives in water damaged, cellulose-rich areas and exposure can cause nose bleeds, flu-like symptoms, headache, fever and dermatitis.

    Aspergillus

Memnoniella is another type of black mold that produces toxic mycotoxins. Memnoniella also thrives in wet, cellulose-rich areas, such as cardboard, ceiling tile, cellulose insulation and wood. The symptoms of Memnoniella exposure are similar to those of Stachybotrys.

    Considerations

Because of the serious health risks associated with black mold, it is important to be extremely cautious when cleaning an area infected with black mold. Wear protective clothing to protect against skin exposure and a respirator or filter dust mask to protect against inhalation of black mold spores.
