Transition

When you first start your dog on Canidae dog food, you should take the time to properly transition her diet from the old food to the new one. Dogs' stomachs can be sensitive to changes in diet. For the best results, you should take at least a week to transition your dog to her new diet. If you are bringing a new pet home for the first time, ask her previous owner what brand of food she was eating, and buy a small bag of this for the transition period. For the first two days of the transition, mix three parts of your dog's old food with one part Canidae dog food. On days three and four, mix one part old food with one part new food. On days five and six increase the portion of Canidae to three parts of the dog's diet with only one part of the previous food, and on the last day of the transition week, feed your dog a diet composed solely of Canidae dog food.

Regular Feeding

The amount of Canidae food that your dog should eat depends upon the weight of the dog. For adult dogs up to 10 pounds, feed 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of dry food daily. Dogs between 10 and 25 pounds should eat 3/4 of a cup to one cup daily. In the 25- to 50-pound range, this increases to 1 to 2 cups. Dogs weighing 50 to 75 pounds should have 2 to 3 cups daily, while dogs 75 to 100 pounds can have 3 to 4 cups a day. In the 100- to 125-pound range, feed your dog 4 to 4-3/4 cup of Canidae food each day. Dogs weighing 125 to 150 pounds can have up to 5-1/2 cups of food daily. If you are feeding canned Canidae dog food to your dog, you can calculate the proper amount by feeding one 13-ounce can per 20 pounds of weight each day.

Considerations

The above guidelines are intended for healthy dogs of the correct weight. Overweight dogs should be fed a special reduced diet. Dogs that are pregnant, lactating or ill also need to be fed a special diet. Puppies need more food each day than adult dogs, and senior dogs should be fed less.
