The American Petroleum Institute provides performance designations to help pick the most suitable engine oil. Oil for diesel engines start with a "C." Current, valid diesel designations are CF, CF-2, CH-4, CI-4 and CJ-4. Higher letter designations are the most recent and better performing oil grades. CF oil is for off-road diesel engines using high sulphur, or "red" diesel fuel.

On the Other: If your tractor uses gasoline

API engine oil designations for gasoline engines start with an "S." The current grades still in use are SJ, SL and SM. Gas engines produced after 2004 require SM rated motor oil.

    Bottom Line

Use the engine oil grade recommended by the owners or service manual of your tractor. If it is an older tractor and the specified oil grade, such as CD for diesels or SF for gas engines, it is acceptable to use a currently available engine oil grade for the type of engine. Viscosity rating of 5W-30 can be used for almost any tractor application.
