The first gasoline powered car was built in 1885 by Karl Benz. Before that, horseless carriages were powered by steam, coal or wind.

Before the colonies wrote the Declaration of Independence, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot drove a self-propelled vehicle in 1769. It was a military tractor powered by steam.
