  • With obesity on the rise in the United States and around the world, many people may not realize they need to diet, because heavy has become the norm. Being overweight can lead to health problems such as heart disease and diabetes, so knowing when to diet is important for maintaining overall health.

    Check Your BMI

When body mass index (BMI) exceeds recommended levels you may need to diet. Obesity is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an adult who as a BMI over 30. You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9. Body mass index can be determined by a caliper or other fat test performed at a gym or doctor's office. You can also calculate body mass by using the formula of weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared. The resulting number is then multiplied by 703. This will give you a general idea of your BMI. Muscle mass weighs more than fat and may skew the results with this type of calculation. Contact a doctor or healthcare professional to get a body mass index calculation.

    Height and Weight

Height and weight charts range from a height of 4 feet 10 inches to 6 feet for women and 5 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 4 inches for men. Height and weight recommendations are based on small, medium and large frames. You can find your frame by putting your arm straight out and bending your elbow up. Turn your palm in to face you and then measure your outside elbow bones from one side to the other. A medium frame for a man at 5 feet 2 inches is 2 1/2 to 2 7/8 up to 2 2/8 to 3 1/4 for a man who is 6 feet 4 inches. Women who have an elbow measurement of 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 at 4 feet 10 inches to 4 feet 11 inches or 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 at 6 feet are considered to have a medium frame. Anything above these measurements for both sexes is large, and anything below is small. Women who are 4 feet 10 inches with a small frame should weigh between 102 and 111. Add 5 to 8 pounds to adjust for frame size, and an extra 1 to 2 pounds for each inch in height. Men start at 5 feet 2 inches and 128 to 134 pounds with an additional 3 to 8 pounds for frame size and 2 to 3 pounds for each inch in height. If you are over your recommended height and weight, cut down on calories and high-fat processed foods to lose weight.

    Feeling Sluggish

People who are overweight tend to become more fatigued than those who are at a healthy weight. According to a study cited by the Archives of Internal Medicine, excess body weight can lead to physical and emotional fatigue as well as depression. This may be related to the overproduction of cytokine and the adverse affect this may have on how the liver processes fat. If you are overweight and are frequently fatigued, it may be necessary to diet for health reasons. Consider eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains to lose weight.
