  • Whether you're moving your toddler from a crib to a child's bed or purchasing a new mattress for a slightly older child, there are several things that should be considered. Safety, size and firmness are all important things to consider before purchasing a mattress. The mattress you buy does not need to be flashy or expensive--so doing a little research before you buy will go a long way.

    Firmness

There have been a lot of recent scientific studies regarding the type of mattress that is best for children. Research suggests that babies and children need a firmer type of mattress to reduce the risk of suffocation. A firm mattress can also help your child have good posture and help with spinal alignment. If your child is still very young, a firm mattress can help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Therefore, consider buying a mattress that has good internal support. A twin mattress and its box spring can be purchased for $80 to $120 at many department stores.

    Materials

A traditional inner-spring mattress is the most common, but there are other types of mattresses available. You can buy an air mattress, which is a good deal if you're on a tight budget. A twin-sized air mattress can be purchased for less than $20, plus it is portable. Some families choose waterbeds, which have some safety issues, but in general, the most appropriate selection is an inner-spring mattress. If you are buying a mattress for a young child who still wets the bed, consider whether you need a mattress that is water-resistant or is easily cleaned.

    Size

Your child's age often dictates the right size of mattress to buy. A toddler is appropriately placed in a toddler bed, which often is a crib conversion. Once the child is ready for kindergarten, a standard twin-sized bed is appropriate; a twin bed could last the child through his high-school years. If your child is on the higher end of the growth charts, consider a full bed or an extended-length mattress to accommodate his expected future height. In general, if your child can safely use a twin bed instead of a toddler bed, it is most prudent to purchase a twin to save money and hassle in the long run.

    Tip

Don't buy the first mattress you see--shop around to find the best deal and quality that your money can buy. If your child is uncomfortable on a very firm mattress, you can buy foam pads that slip between the sheet and the mattress to provide some additional cushion.
