Whether someone sews for a living or as a hobby, they depend on their sewing machine working properly. When it doesn't, they will need the services of a sewing machine repair technician. Several educational opportunities are available to those who wish to learn this important trade.

On-The-Job Training

Many appliance repair businesses will train apprentices in sewing machine repair. To be hired by such a company, you will usually be expected to have some background in electronics, either through an electronics training school, a high school vocational program, or previous work or military experience.

Distance Learning Programs

The Gresslin Information Center and the California Academy of Sewing Machine Repair provide training manuals and DVDs for those who wish to learn sewing machine repair from home. If you don't have a background in appliance repair, you may want to first seek distance learning training in a generalist appliance course, such as those offered by Penn-Foster, prior to trying to train yourself at home. The California Academy of Sewing Machine Repair and White Sewing Center (see the Resources section of this article) offer three-day hands-on sewing machine repair training workshops.
