Most plants, including some types of beans, can benefit from the addition of human hair to soil in which they grow. One of the essential elements that plants need is nitrogen. Many plants are unable to process the nitrogen in the atmosphere and must absorb it from soil. When human hair decomposes in soil, it adds nitrogen to the soil.

On the Other: Legumes Can Process Nitrogen

Beans are legumes, a group of plants that can process, or "fix," atmospheric nitrogen. Soybeans, fava beans and other grain type legumes are able to produce most, or all, of the nitrogen they need through this process. Common beans, however, are not good fixers and may produce less than the required amount of nitrogen.

    Bottom Line

Although beans can form nitrogen without added fertilizer, some types may benefit from low levels of supplementary nitrogen. If the beans are able to fix the amount of nitrogen they need, they will not be affected by the added nitrogen. Adding human hair to the soil in which beans are growing is fine, since it will not harm them and could help their growth.
