  • Just like a human ear infection, dogs can suffer a lot of pain from an ear infection. If you suspect that your dog might have one, you should seek medical attention from your veterinarian as soon as possible. Although there are some things you can do in the meantime to relieve the pain, if it is an infection, antibiotics are probably necessary to kill the bacteria and stop the pain.

    Treating your dog's ear infection

Seek medical attention through a local veterinarian. Heed her advice and administer ear drops or antibiotics regularly, as prescribed. It won't always be obvious that your dog has an infection because many ear infections are inner- or middle-ear issues not visible to the eye, so don't leave it to chance. But in the meantime, a warm compress applied to your dog's outer ear can help to ease discomfort during recovery. And as a preventive measure against ear infection, check your dog's ears regularly. The wax should not have a bad odor and should be naturally colored. If there is a strong stench or a yellow or black crusted tint to the wax, there could be infection. Clean the outer ear if there is a lot of discharge (contact your vet for details on when or how often to clean) using cottonballs. Do not attempt to clean the inner ear, because you could damage your pet's ear.
