  • When the GSM setting displays on BlackBerry phones it is often the result of a malfunctioning SIM card, lack of Internet access, network outages, being outside of primary coverage areas or a damaged device.

    Lack of Internet

If your BlackBerry is showing only GSM, it is letting you know that you have access only to voice and text messaging services. Check with your wireless provider to ensure that your wireless plan includes Internet access.

    Damaged SIM Card

Another reason for the phone to show GSM is a malfunctioning or damaged SIM card. Have your wireless provider inspect your SIM card to ensure that it is functioning properly.

    Coverage Area

Your BlackBerry will also display GSM if you are outside 3G or EDGE network coverage area. In these instances, your phone will display GSM until you move back into those areas, where you will have full use of the network.

    Network Outage

The wireless provider may be having problems with its EDGE or 3G network, which will impair service and cause the GSM setting to display on your phone.

    Malfunctioning Device

If you are within the wireless provider's primary coverage area, have Internet enabled on your device and your SIM card is not damaged, there may be something wrong with your BlackBerry.
