If you are looking for a replacement engine for your car, truck or boat, a crate engine may be the solution. Crate engines offer a wide range of options to replace your current worn-out or underpowered motor.
Identification
Crate engines are ready-to-install motors from auto, engine and aftermarket parts manufacturers. Engines are available for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler applications.
Types
Crate motors are available from several different sources. Ford, GM and Chrysler provide new performance engines using blocks and parts from their own resources. Performance-parts companies such as Edelbrock and independent engine builders also sell crate engines.

Crate engines are usually purchased as performance engines. Crate engines provide street-legal, high-horsepower options that can be installed and driven.
Considerations

Potential
OEM (Ford, GM and Chrysler) crate engines provide additional performance at low cost compared with building a motor from scratch. But for a crate engine with maximum performance potential, independent engine producers are a better option.
