To date, no concrete clean air studies have been conducted on lucky bamboo, which is actually a lily plant in the Dracaena family. However, in general, Dracaena plants have been shown to be effective in cleaning the air, as they are not only highly competent in converting carbon dioxide to fresh oxygen, but are also known to remove harmful airborne benzene and formaldehyde.

On the Other: Only Effective Under Proper Conditions

Lucky bamboo is a temperamental house plant and cannot flourish in outdoor environments. It requires purified water free from chemicals to be replaced every week with levels at approximately one inch from the canes, needs plenty of direct sunlight, and must be kept in room temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees. Otherwise, it begins dying and cannot effectively convert carbon dioxide to oxygen to clean the air.

    Bottom Line

If one is able to maintain an indoor environment with the proper amounts of water and sunlight, as well as ideal temperatures, it is possible that lucky bamboo will clean the air effectively as its familial cousins do. But if you want be sure your indoor air is being cleaned, choose another plant whose abilities for cleaning the air have been verified.
