Hybrids quickly took over the automobile market and helped provide consumers with less gas mileage, better performing cars and cleaner emissions. The next generation of the hybrid car is known as the "plug-in" hybrid, and it aims to give consumers even more advantages.
Function
The plug-in hybrid car works like a regular hybrid car where both a gas-powered and electric-powered engine are in the car. Instead of relying solely on gas, the cars can be plugged in to charge a battery pack.
Benefits
The plug-in hybrid will save consumers even more on gas money and cause less carbon dioxide in the air. When cars are plugged in during "off-peak" hours, less electricity will be used and cost less than paying for gas.
Considerations
Some of the first models may not be as efficient until all of the technology is worked out. Waiting until they become mainstream will cause fewer issues for drivers.
Types
Many car companies are developing the plug-in hybrid car. This includes models from Chevy, Dodge, Ford and a Toyota Prius that has been converted into the PriusPlus.
Taxes
Many governments are working on tax credits to supply consumers with large tax breaks for investing in a plug-in hybrid car. Check state and national tax offices for information on the credits.
