    Good question!

The kind of question that answers too may range from a cold reporting of 'facts' to distorted and vehement attacks to anything 'Biblical' or on the author of the question.

The Jews had no chance of breaking through the walls / defenses of Jericho. The symbolic message then, is later specifically taught in the N.T., ..."With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." —Matthew 19:26

There isn't much symbolism behind the Walls of Jericho. They were the thick walls of a city, which fell to Joshua by his following the directions of the Lord. God had promised them the land of Israel (Israel and Judah during the period of the divided Kingdom and later the northern Kingdom would disappear). The city of Jericho was a strong hold of the Philistines and was taken over.

The walls of Jericho symbolized opposition of the Cananites to the invasion by the Hebrew tribes. As the "chosen people", they felt entitled to the land and justified in committing genocide to possess it. +2
